Quick Guide

If you are wondering what kind of longboard you should buy and have no idea whatsoever about them then a longboard suited for cruising or carving is what you need. Most beginners usually buy longboards as a means of commuting, or just riding along the streets at high speeds. Travelling on rough surfaces, racing, especially downhill racing are for more advanced riders. Here are few tips to pick the ideal longboard for cursing and carving for beginners.

Choosing The Right Cruising Deck

Deck length – Choose the board in the range of 28 inches to 46 inches. This size makes cursing and carving very easy and very comfortable. Shorter or young riders should stick to short cruising decks of sizes between 28 inches and 32 inches that ensure great balance and stability for riders of the mentioned size. Choosing a mid-sized cruising deck is sometimes favorable as well. They are 32 inches to 42 inches. They are suitable for almost all riding styles and the most common decks on the street are within this range.

Deck flex – Decks with a small amount of flex give riders some extra leverage through turns and provide some shock absorbing or dampening quality over rough surfaces. The amount of flex a deck should have depends on the rider’s weight. The proper flex choice based on the body weight will provide a much better dampening system. Some riders prefer a stiff deck that provides a direct response from their lean and sway during the motion. However, beginners are recommended to use boards with flex as they do not have the necessary expertise to carry their weight as means of control while riding.

Deck kick tail – Kick tails are useful whilst making quick turns, doing tricks, and for pop up and down curbs. Typically aggressive riders use longboard with a kick tail. Boards without kick tails maximize the effectiveness of the wheel base thereby making the board and the ride much more balanced and stable. The presence of kick tails depends on personal preferences of the rider. However, since decks with no kick tails provide more stability, beginners are suggested to go for no kick tail longboards.

Choosing The Right Cruising Trucks

Truck width – Trucks are an important part as they play a large role in turning and keep the wheels anchored on to the board. There are characteristically two truck widths to choose from 150 millimeter and 180 millimeter. The width of the trucks should be chosen in correspondence to the width of the deck. Cruising decks that are less than 8.5 inches usually go well with trucks of 150 millimeter. Carving decks usually range from 8.5 inches to 10.5 inches and go well with 180 millimeter trucks.

size-trucks-longboardStandard or reverse kingpin –Reverse kingpin trucks are the most common ones used in longboards. They are designed for the higher range of maneuverability that longboarding requires.  It allows for more carving and turning ability. Standard style trucks are rarely used for longboarding. They are often seen on street skateboards.  This type of trucks is recommended for cruising boards with kick tails as it allows for nice and sharp response the use of tail.

Choosing The Right Cruising Wheels

Wheel diameter – Typically, longer decks go well with larger wheels and smaller decks go well with smaller wheels. For decks 40 inches and above 70 to 75 millimeter wheels are suggested. For decks ranging from 34 inches to 42 inches, 68 to 72 millimeter wheels are suitable. For short decks of 34 inches and below, 60 to 67 millimeter wheels are ideal. In all of the cases, wheels in the lower range will aid acceleration and wheels of larger range will aid speedy rides.

Wheel durometer – The right hardness of the wheels depend the weight of the rider and personal preference. The heavier the rider is the harder the wheels should be. Soft wheels roll smoothly over bumps and cracks. For riders weighing 135 pounds and below, cruising wheels of 78 A to 80 A are good. Riders weighing 135 pounds to 175 pounds wheels 80 A to 83 A are ideal. Riders above 175 pounds should go for wheels 83 A to 86 A.

Wheel shape –A sharp lip on wheels allows for more grip than a round lip during turns. Round lips are a good choice for surf inspired slides and carves or any other type of power slides. Round lip allows ofr more predictable slides.
